One of my first bakes!

Welcome to my very first “for someone” bakes, way back in May 2011! This bake was inspired by an article I saw where cupcakes were decorated with what looked like glittery flowers… I had to find out more!

I found the original source of the article and discovered how simple these flowers were made… all I needed was some small marshmallows – the kind you get in hot chocolate – and some edible sugar glitter/ coloured sugar.

The cupcake recipe was simple enough, and I iced these with standard buttercream. Once that was done, I got to making the ‘petals’.

The easiest way I can describe this:

  1. Put the coloured sugar/ edible glitter into a bowl or saucer – you’re going to be dipping in it!
  2. Cut the marshmallows into two pieces diagonally, changing their shape from cylinders to triangles
  3. Dip the cut side into the sugar/ glitter, and the freshly cut marshmallow will act like glue!
  4. Starting with the outer part of the flower shape, start arranging the petals in a circular pattern (see the picture) adding layer upon layer.
  5. You may need to add more buttercream as you go to provide glue for the petals to stick to the cake

These not only taste delicious, but also due to the comments I got on this particular bake, it really gave me the confidence to go out and start exploring other ideas!
